In brief

Dr Gobinder Singh graduated in medicine from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1986 and trained in Ireland and the United Kingdom until 1994, obtaining the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of both Edinburgh and Glasgow in 1991. He returned to Malaysia as a Lecturer and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia from 1994 to 1999, and has been in private practice at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur since 1999, some 27 years.

He served as President of the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association for 2013 to 2014, having sat on its Council from 2010 to 2015. He has published in peer-reviewed journals, written teaching modules for the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Masters in Family Medicine, and provides medico-legal expert opinion.

He has been replacing hips and knees since 1986, first in Dublin, and began using computer navigation for knee replacement in the 1990s. Most of his hip and knee replacements are now robotic-arm assisted.

In his own words

My main interests are joint replacement surgery of the knee and hip using robotic assisted techniques, arthroscopic surgery of the knee, shoulder and ankle, including ACL reconstructions, meniscal repairs, shoulder instability procedures (arthroscopic Bankart repairs), management of shoulder impingement syndrome, frozen shoulder, acromioclavicular joint arthritis, rotator cuff tear, and decompression and repair of ankle injuries. I also have a special interest in biological therapies in and around joints including by using PRP and stem cell therapy.

Forty years of joint replacement

Joint replacement has changed a great deal over his career, and the clearest measure of it is how long people stay in hospital.

1986 to 1987

Dr Steevens' Hospital, DublinHis first years in hip and knee replacement. Patients stayed in hospital about two weeks afterwards.

1987 to 1988

Leicester, EnglandHip and knee replacement in the English hospital system.

1992 to 1993

Brook General and Greenwich, LondonOperating independently. By this point a hip replacement meant about a week in hospital.

1994 to 1999

In 1986 a hip replacement meant about a fortnight as an inpatient. By the early 1990s it was around a week. The insurance industry's own claims data now puts the average stay for a knee replacement in a Malaysian private hospital at about four days, which thecost guide sets out with its source.
